Generaly accepted rules for rolling
Rolling for items in the game is a big issue and if you do not follow the generally accepted rules you get a bad reputation for yourself and for the Guild that you belong to. Unfortunately these rules are not written down in a manual anywhere, because they have been invented by the playing community. So in an effort to have everyone understand and use these rules, here they are as I understand then.
Key Terms
NEED = An item that is usable by your class, makes sense for your class, and is better than any item which you already have, OR an item which can be used in your profession at your level.
GREED = An item which is not better than one you already have, and will become your chosen item of use OR an item which canot be used by your profession, or is above your level in your profession.
PASS = Not rolling on the item – using the "X" button to close the rolling window, or simly letting the timer run out without rolling.
BOP = Bind on Pickup – an item which as soon as it is picked up by a person becomes soulbound.
BOE = Bind onEquip – an item which does not become soulbound on pickup, and instead becomes soulbound when equipped.
DE = Disenchant – the action performed by a disenchanter which changes a Green or blue item into materials which can be used by the enchanting profession.
NINJA LOOTER = A person who does not follow the generally accepted rolling rules, and rolls NEED when they do not need, or GREED when they should pass, so that they can gain items unfairly for their own benefit.
General Theory
Deciding what to roll (Need or Greed or Pass) is dependant upon whether the item being rolled on is BOP or BOE. You need to first check which of these two categories the item falls into BEFORE deciding wat to roll using the guidelines below.
BOP (Bind on Pickup)
If the item is BOP, it cannot be traded or sold on the Auction House after it has been picked up. This means that if someone NEEDS the item, because it is better than anything they already have, and they will equip and use it immediatley, then fair enough – they should roll NEED.
BUT if nobody needs it, then that means that whoever wins the item will sell it to a vendor, and this is the definition of GREED. HOWEVER, the item can be disenchanted if a disenchanter is in the party, and THE MATERIALS CREATED AS A RESULT OF A DISENCHANT CAN BE SOLD ON THE AUCTION HOUSE FOR MORE THAT THE ITEM CAN BE SOLD TO A VENDOR. Therefore, everyone in the party should PASS the item, thus leaving it on the corpse. The enchanter should then pick it up, and the item can be disenchanted into the materials. And then everyone in the group rolls (by typing " /roll " ) to see who the disenchanted materials belong to. The disenchanter then trades the materials to the winner.
If anyone rolls greed then the item cannot be disenchanted and the player rolling greede will gain a bad reputation for himself and the Guild he belongs to.
There fore, you should only ever roll NEED or PASS on BOP items
BOE (Bind on Equip)
Bind on Equip items are much easier to roll on. This is because if someone rolls the wrong way, it is not a disaster, because the item is not immediately soulbound to the winner. So if a rolling mistake is made then the item can be discussed by the party members and either re-rolled (by typing " /roll " ) or just traded.
If somebody NEEDS the item, because it is better than anything they already have, and they will equip and use it immediatley, then fair enough – they should roll NEED.
BUT if nobody needs it then all members should roll GREED, because the winner can then sell the item to other players or sell it on the Auction House, or arrange for it to be disenchanted.
Therefore players should either roll NEED or GREED on BOE items.
Finally
I hope that these guidelines make sense to you and that they enrich your gaming experience by limiting the amount of times your are accused of being a "Ninja Looter".
I also hope that everyone in Ordo Legionis represents their guild well in rolling and thus adds to the positive image our members and guild have in the game.
Thanks for taking the time to read this lengthy but important description of the generally accepted rules regarding rolling.
Regards, Daednumai.
